Today a project was assigned on the peridic table of elements. Groups were assigned a topic and must present a poster, quiz, and handout. Due date is either monday march 15 or wednesday march 17. Class time was given to start organizing and planning the project with our groups.

03/05/10 - DAY1DEMISSION SPECTRA- Each element gives off a specific colour of light
- These are known as Emission spectra
-Unique to each element
-If electrons absorb energy they can be bumped to a higher level
- When they fall to a lower level, they release that energy as light
ATOMIC STRUCTURE- Atoms are made up of parts called
subatomic particles- Protons (+) and Electrons (-) Neutrons (0)
EX: Particle - PROTON
- Mass (Multiples of proton) 1
- Charge (Elementary Charges) +1
- Location - Nucleus
Particle - NEUTRON
- Mass (Multiples of proton) 1
- Charge (Elementary Charges) 0
Location - Nucleus
Particle - ELECTRON
- Mass (Multiples of proton) 1/1837
- Charge (Elementary Charges) -1
- Location - Outside Nucleus
ISOTOPES- The # of protons determine the type of element
- Changing the # of neutrons changes the isotope of the element
- All isotopes have the same chemical properties
THE NUCLEI OF THE 3 ISOTOPES OF HYDROGEN- protium, 1 proton
- Deuterium, 1 proton + 1 neutron
Tritium, 1 proton + 2 neutrons
MASS #- Mass # = protons + neutrons
** Mass # = Atomic # + # Neutrons
** A = Z + N
- "A"
- Different Isotops have different masses
EX: 7/3 Li
3 Protons, 4 Neutrons

Bohr Models
- Atoms are electrically neutral
- Two different models can be used to describe electron
configuration
- Energy Level Model
- Bohr Model
- Electrons occupy or orbits
- 2 electrons in the first orbital
- 8 electrons in the second orbital
- 8 electrons in the third orbital
- "Octets" - levels
EX:
energy level model -
Bohr Model
Hybridized Orbitals- The first of the Bohr leves is the 1st orbitals and it holes 2 electrons
- The second level contains the 3 electrons, 2px, 2p2, 2p3 orbitals they combine (hybridize_ to form one 2sp3 orbital
